Janam Janam - Dilwale | Shah Rukh Khan | Kajol | Pritam | Arijit | Full ...

When we listen  to any Indian song be it Hindi or Tamil or any other Indian language try to scan the song for Sanskrit words and find the meaning.

Today lets listen to Janam Janam Janam from Dilwale.

Lets take a look at the lyrics.

In bold and blue are words of Sanskrit origin.

Janam janam janam saath chalna yunhi
Kasam tumhe kasam aake milna yahin
Ek jaan hai bhale do badan ho judaa
Meri hoke hamesha hi rehna
Kabhi na kehna alvida
Meri subah ho tumhi aur tumhi shaam ho
Tum dard ho tum hi aaraam ho
Meri duaaon se aati hai bas ye sadaa
Meri hoke hamesha hi rehna
Kabhi na kehna alvida

Meri hoke hamesha hi rehna
Kabhi na kehna Alvida
Teri baahon mein hai mere dono jahaan
Tu rahe jidhar meri jannat wahin
Jal rahi agan hai jo ye do tarfa
Na bujhe kabhi meri mannat yahi
Tu meri aarzu, main teri aashiqui
Tu meri shayari, main teri mausiqi
Talab talab talab bas teri hai mujhe
Nason mein tu nasha banke ghulna yunhi
Meri mohabbat ka karna tu haq ye adaa
Meri hoke hamesha hi rehna
Kabhi na kehna Alvida
Meri subah ho tumhi aur tumhi shaam ho
Tum dard ho, tum hi aaraam ho
Meri duaaon se aati hai bas ye sadaa
Meri hoke hamesha hi rehna
Kabhi na kehna Alvida

Well...so many Sanskrit words Shah Rukh Khan was belting out in Dilwale.

Dil is a Persian word meaning Heart.

The Sanskrit word for Heart is a very interesting word that explains the function of the heart itself.

The Sanskrit word for Heart is hRdaya ( हृदय )..from this we get the Tamil word Idhayam.

Lets dissect Hrdaya!
Ok lets get the scalpels ready and cut into the heart.
We can dissect it into 3 parts!

hRdaya (हृदय) is made up of 3 root words....hR, da and ya.

hR( हृ) is the root word for harati (हरति)  which means to take away.

da (द) is the root word for  dadAti ( ददाति ) which means to give

ya( य) is the root word for ayati (अयति ) which means to circulate/move about.

There you go! You can put your scalpels down now.

hRdaya (हृदय) just described the function of the heart..that is the heart takes away deoxygenated blood, gives oxygenated blood and circulates blood.

So with every beat of your hRdaya (हृदय) now you know Sanskrit too!

Now..why did I highlight all those words in blue?

Thats homework!

vara leela gana lola-unnikrishnan.wmv

Another lovely version of Vara Leela Gana Lola.

Vara Leela Gaana Lola (Thyagaraja Krithi - Chorus)

Today we are going to talk about rANA(राणा) and raNa (रण)

Lets get to know the difference.

rANA as in the name of the actor who played the role of Bhalladeva in Bahubali.

rANA(राणा) stems from the word rAjan राजन् which clearly means King/Chief/Sovereign.

Next is raNa (रण) which means battle.

We have names like raNjIt (रणजीत्) which means raNa(Battle) jIt(victorious)

The word raNadhIra  (रणधीर) means dauntless in battle and this word can be found in a famous Saint Thyagaraja Song titled Vara Leela Gana Lola..

रणधीर सर्व सारा
सुकुमार बुध विहारा
धनुज नीर धर समीरण
करुणा रस परिपूर्ण
जार जोर पाहि माम्

raNadhIra sarva sAra sukumAra budha vihAra danuja nIradhara
samIraNa karuNArasa paripUrNa jAra cOra pAhimAm

Dauntless in battle. O the essence of everything!
Tender one.. Lord who abides in the hearts of the wise.
O breeze which drives away the clouds of the non divine(asura)
One brimming with the juice of Mercy.
O paramour (of Gopis)! O thief (of butter)! Protect me.

Sivuni Aana Full Video Song || Baahubali (Telugu) || Prabhas, Rana, Anus...

Lets listen to this song from Bahubali.

The song is in Telugu but the chorus is Sanskrit that too the Shiva Tandava Stotram.

The Shiva Tandava Stotram was composed by none other than the great devotee of Lord Shiva the great Ravana  of Ramayan Fame.

But before we get into too much details..lets get to know Prabhas!

Yes...our Bahubali Hottie Prabhas!

Lets start.

Prabhas....what does his name mean?

Well..its a Sanskrit root word प्रभास्(Prabhas) which means Effulgence,Splendour,To Shine.

Well Prabhas surely lives up to his name!

To learn a new language we need to start having a Search Engine in our brain.

We need to search for the meaning of day to day words we see.

There is no acute need to dive into religous texts right away because without a basic understanding of grammar we are not going to appreciate any hidden meanings in religious text.

Many learners of Sanskrit try to become too "Bhagavad Geetaish" right away.

No harm but slow and steady wins the race.

Try looking for meaning of simple words we come across daily for examples names!

If you are Hindu mostly Hindu names are Sanskrit origin, so start of by searching for the meaning of your own name.
Next as you watch any Indian movie..be it Bollywood,Tollywood,Kollywood or any other wood..try to search for the meaning of the names of your favorite movie stars.

For example today we learnt the meaning of the word Prabhas.

Now just dont stop there..we need to form links.

Let me give you a link from the word Prabhas.

From the root word Prabhas we get the word Prabha.

The word Prabha is found in the famous Ganesh Mantra:

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥

Vakra Tunda Maha Kaya Surya Koti Samaprabha |
Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada ||

Surya Koti Sama Prabha means : Effulgence equivalent to a Crore of Suns.

So there you go...learnt a new word today.

Prabhas!

Lets talk about Rana later!

The Sanskrit Language is always linked to Religion and Spirituality and even given a Divine status after all its also known as the Language of the Gods.
In fact many who seek to study Sanskrit are usually those who want to explore religious text further eg The Bhagavad Geeta,Vedanta/Upanishads etc.

Well..there is no harm in this but to a great extent when we give anything Divine status, we subconsciously start to feel its "hard to get".

Don't we place God high up in Heaven and feel He is hard to get? That eventually gives us the licence to do as we please because we feel "Hey no big deal..Morgan Freeman is high up in heaven busy with Jim Carrey and none of us are going to become Bruce Almighty!"

So what I am trying to say here is have a more relaxed approach in learning any language be it Sanskrit or any other known language in this world.

Make a language user friendly in our mind.
To learn anything we have to experiment..alleviate our fear and feel connected and give ourselves room to feel disconnected too and then try again.

Many claim that learning Sanskrit makes them feel more "spiritual"..well hard to say for sure.
It might actually work for some in a indirect manner when they get exposed to religious text and decide to imbibe the essence within.

But dont expect any change just solely due to a language rewiring synapses in our brain because the the only true spirituality comes from the language of the heart that needs no words.

Make Your Life a Rose That Speaks Silently In the Language of Fragrance.
(Sathya Sai Baba)

Kal Ho Na Ho-Sanskrit Song-By Shrirang Bhave

One of the best ways to learn a new language is by listening to songs.
Even though we might not fully understand it yet but we need to form pathways in our brain to create familiarity to the impressions of sound.

We humans learn through our active senses.

For those of us who are able to hear and see, we rely a lot on auditory and visual  input.
Each input forms impressions in our brain what I call "cerebral apps" where even though we might not actively recall everything we heard or saw but it remains in our subconscious which can be accessed anytime.

One also learns faster by singing songs in the language we desire to know.

Again ..we need not understand every word we sing because mostly we sing by sound recognition more than understanding the meaning of each word.

Just like reading, the human brain reads by word recognition and not be spelling each word.
The brain recognizes the first and last letter in a word and the rest goes by recognition the word by its previous imprint created by initial exposure to the word.

So learning is all about creating new pathways in the brain and also keeping it activated.

To study something new we first need the interest..then perseverance BUT we have to remember our perseverance can wax and wane like the moon.

There would be the days where we feel totally roller coaster high to study and there are days we might be feel total inertia.

This is normal...our 50 shades of grey matter takes a break from time to time.

Just keep going.

This is when I recommend listening to songs to refresh our memory.
