Cow and Chicken Cartoon Intro / Opening / Theme (1997)

The Cow, The Bull and Ghee!

सर्पिस्

Today's post is going to be very Malaysian because I would be quoting a Malay proverb but worry not!  everyone would still get their dose of Sanskrit.

I am a doctor  after all..I won't forget to prescribe your regular doses!

Ok..let's go:

"Lembu punya susu sapi dapat nama"

Actually it means that "another person gets credit for the work done"

Lembu means Cow in Malay

Susu means Milk (Ok..Indian citizens I know you guys are laughing because Susu has a different meaning in an Indian language)

Sapi means Bull in Malay

Nama means Name in Malay

In Malay, Ghee is called Minyak Sapi that translates as Bull's Oil.

So the proverb says that the milk is from the cow but the bull gets the name because ghee is called Bull's oil.

Now this is where I would go Sanskrit to explain  why Sapi which means Bull in Malay is used for the word Ghee.

Reason ?

Because the Malay word Sapi is derived from the Sanskrit word सर्पिस् (sarpis)which means Ghee.

The confusion came about in Malay because not many were aware of the actual origin of the word Sapi.

So technically Bull didn't get the name for the Ghee!

Machine Gun :यन्त्रशतघ्नी  (yantrashataghnI)

Gun powder : अग्नेयछूर्णम्(agneyaCUrNam)

Since we spoke about Guns today lets sign off with the word for  Roses in Sanskrit ..जवापुष्पानि (javApuSpAni)

UB40 - Fools Rush In

 मात्राछन्दस् (mAtrACandas)

Today we would talk about a type of मात्राछन्दस्  (mAtrACandas).

I am sure many of us would have heard the Bhajogovindam of Adi Shankara where the famous 1st stanza goes.

भज गोविन्दं भज गोविन्दं
गोविन्दं भज मूढमते ।
सम्प्राप्ते सन्निहिते काले
नहि नहि रक्षति डुकृङ्करणे ॥

bhaja govindaM bhaja govindaM

govindaM bhaja mUdhmate

samprApte sannihite kAle

nahi nahi rakSati dukRṅkarane

Worship Govinda, worship Govinda,
Worship Govinda, oh fool!
At the time of your death,
Rules of grammar will not save you.

Bhajo Govindam comes under  मात्राछन्दस्  (mAtrACandas)..that too a subtype named पादाकुलकम्(pAdAkulakam) in which each verse has 4 lines with 16 matras each.

मात्राछन्दस्  (mAtrACandas) calculation rules:

1) One count for a short vowel and consonants with short vowels.

2) Two counts for long vowels, consonants with long vowels and conjunct consonants.

In Bhajo Govindam there is a peculiarity ..that is the first verse does not really entirely follow the
मात्राछन्दस्  (mAtrACandas) rules.

Let me explain:

In the 1st verse of Bhajo Govindam.

bhaja govindaM bhaja govindaM

govindaM bhaja mUdhmate

samprApte sannihite kAle

nahi nahi rakSati dukRṅkarane

The 2nd line does NOT follow the 16 mAtrA rule...the 2nd line "govindaM bhaja mUdhmate"only has 14 mAtrA.

The 3rd and 4th line follow the 16 mAtrA
 rule.

But I dont know why only the line which say "mUdhmate"(Fool) has 14mAtrA..no one explains why?

Who knows may be since the composer was calling another a fool the composer decided to play the fool around too and not follow 16 mAtrA rule or may be he was hinting that "Only fools rush in!"

Tere Bina | Arijit Singh | Aakanksha Sharma | Lyrics

विना-योगे तृतिया प्रयोगाः vinA-yoge tRtiyA prayogAH

त्वया विना (tvayA vinA) Without you!

Today we would learn the usage of the word विना(vinA) which means Without.

The usage of the word विना(vinA) warrants for the object  concerned to be in

तृतिया विभक्तिः(3rd case ending).

Let's take a few examples:

बालः दुग्धेन विना रोदिति | bAlaH dugdhena vinA roditi(the boy cries without milk)

वृद्धः दण्डेन विना न चलति | vRddhaH daNDena vinA na calati(the old man does not walk without the stick)

Now how we do impress a someone and say "Without you I can't live"?

त्वया विना न जीवामि | tvayA vinA na jIvAmi.

So use this pick up line!

Very few people speak Sanskrit so a guy can easily impress a girl by speaking some pick up lines in Sanskrit because not many of us can sing like Arijit Singh singing "Tere Bina" (Without You)

Ricky Nelson - I Will Follow You (1963)

अनुष्टुप् छन्दः (anuSTup CandaH)

Let's cover some prosody today.

Prosody is the metrical arrangement of syllables in poetry...that is in Sanskrit you cant simply break out into poetry after getting high on marijuana or alcohol because you need to focus to get the meters right(but some do say Soma juice was intoxicating !)

There are two types of meters:

1)वर्नच्छन्दः(varnacCandaH)

2)मात्राच्छन्दः(mAtrAcCandaH)

Today we would talk about a very important and common meter called the अनुष्टुप् छन्दः (anuSTup CandaH)

The Ramayana and Mahabharata are composed in अनुष्टुप् छन्दः (anuSTup CandaH)

Let's do some calculation.

The order of this meter is 8+8+8+8 =32

It has 4 padas of 8 syllables each.

The 5th syllable of each pada is a laghu and the 6th is a guru.

The 7th syllable of the 2nd and 4th pada is laghu.

The the 7th syllable of the 1st and 3rd pada is guru.

This shloka explains the definition of the अनुष्टुप् छन्दः (anuSTup CandaH)

लक्षणः---
"श्लोके षष्ठं गुरु ज्ञेयं, सर्वत्र लघु पञ्चमम् ।
द्विचतुष्पादयोर्ह्रस्वं सप्तमं दीर्घमन्ययोः ।।"

अनुष्टुप् (anuSTup) is for following God and and its means Following.

So its very important that we do not alter any shloka just to fit in the names of anyone we adore and change the whole format of the meter.

It's totally HARAAM (impermissible)to do innovation to religious stanzas.

Hey but I got some information for everyone, though अनुष्टुप् छन्दः (anuSTup CandaH) is for following God but even the Kama Sutra is written in अनुष्टुप् छन्दः (anuSTup CandaH)..well I guess we have to keep following!

Queen - I Want To Break Free (Official Video)

I want to break free! मोक्षः(mokSaH)

One of the most over used word in the world. मोक्षः(mokSaH).

मोक्षः(mokSaH) has multiple meanings but its mostly about getting detached from something or getting released or even a discharge from debt and liberation.

Mostly think the word मोक्षः(mokSaH) has a "holy" undertone but nope my dear..words are neutral. Only when we personalize it we start to feel its holy or unholy.

Let me give you an example:

What do we call a escape from a prison in Sanskrit?

कारागृहात् मोक्षम् (kArAgRhAt mokSam).

Well unless the prisoner escaped prison to run to a secluded spot to meditate and start an ashram, I do not think there in anything holy in the act.

Anyway today's lesson was just about मोक्षः(mokSaH)..it all depends what we are trying to break free from but Freddie Mercury surely described मोक्षः(mokSaH) well in his classic hit.

Ultraman Cosmos: Something You Can Do Lyrics

Ultraman Cosmos.

I don't know about other parts of the world but out here where I stay in Malaysia, Ultraman Cosmos is pretty popular among kids from time immemorial and still rules the hearts of everyone.

So let's take a lesson or two from Ultraman Cosmos.

Actually Ultraman Cosmos is like an Avatar that is whenever(यदा यदा  yadA yadA) there is decline

( ग्लानिः glAniH) in the well being in the world he then (तदा tadA) takes form(सम्भवति  sambhavati) to annihilate the evil doers (दुष्कृताम् duSkRtAm)

Ultraman Cosmos fights with and kills the monsters (रक्षस rakSasa)and reinstates the peace and harmony in the world(धर्मसंस्थापनम् dharmasaMsthApanam) from time to time(काले काले kAle kAle).

Ultraman is like a Yogi because he uses sunlight (सूर्यकान्ति sUryakAnti) as his energy source.

If you watch Ultraman wrestle the monsters..it might remind you of Khabib and Mc Gregor and just like Khabib gets his energy from adhering to دين( Deen/religion), Ultraman gets his energy from the sunlight which supplies him the energizing electrons called Prana.(प्राणः).

Ultraman has a sensor that gives him the signal that he is low on Prana.(प्राणः) and right away Ultraman flies towards the Sun to get his fix of Prana.(प्राणः).

So what does this all show us?

That if we get the right supply of Prana.(प्राणः) from sunlight (सूर्यकान्ति sUryakAnti)  we can annihilate every negativity in us and destroy all the inner demons(असूरःasUrah)  in us after all the actual meaning of असूरः(asUrah) is absence of light.

Jai Ho! Ultraman Cosmos!

Kannaa Nee Thoongada Full Video Song - Baahubali 2 Video Songs Tamil | ...

धवः(dhavaH) (Husband).

Today we will talk  about Husband!

Before that feminists out there don't get all worked up reading what Chanakya wrote about salvation for woman.

Ok..brace yourselves babes...here goes.

Chanakya Neeti says:

स्त्री दान दे कर, उपवास रख कर और पवित्र जल का पान करके पावन नहीं हो सकती. वह पति के चरणों को धोने से और ऐसे जल का पान करने से शुद्ध होती है.(Hindi translation)

"A woman does not become holy by offering charity, by observing hundreds of fasts, or by sipping sacred water, as by sipping the water used to wash her husband’s feet."...Chanakya Neeti.

So don't waste time on spirituality mumbo jumbo just worship the God in human form at home! The Husband!

Anyway lets get to the word of the day.

धवः(dhava) means Husband.

Most of us must have heard the word माधवः(mAdhavaH) which is a combination of two words:

मा(mA) and धवः(dhava).

मा(mA) is one of the names of Goddess Lakshmi.

Lets put the words together...माधवः(mAdhavaH) means Husband of mA(Lakshmi)..therefore it refers to Lord Vishnu and since Lord Krishna is the Avatar of Lord Vishnu, He is also called mAdhavaH.

Last but not least...don't forget to do what Chanakaya recommended!
Remember..the Tamilians got it right when they said  "Kanavaney Kankanda Deivam" (English: Husband is a Palpable God)

Crazy Frog - Axel F

वैभवविभ्रान्ति (vaibhavavibhrAnti) Grandiose Delusions.

Today let's talk about a psychiatric condition known as  Grandiose Delusions(Delusion of Grandeur)

In Grandiose Delusions  is seen in conditions such a schizophrenia and bipolar disorders where one displays a false belief that he/she possesses superior characteristics such as genius, fame, wealth, omnipotence and also some even belief they have superhuman and divine powers.

Many exhibit the strongest effects on a full moon night and a person on a Grandiose roller coaster can have intensely high energy levels!

So what do we call this condition in Sanskrit?

Grandiose in Sanskrit is called वैभव (vaibhava).

Delusions in Sanskrit is called  विभ्रान्ति (vibhrAnti)

Therefore Grandiose Delusions in Sanskrit is वैभवविभ्रान्ति (vaibhavavibhrAnti).

शिवः(shiva)

What does शिवः mean?

A popular Guruji gives a rather different meaning online(No! No! It's not the E =MC^2 Guruji)

This Guruji says शिव  means "that which is not" which to a great extent does not jive with the etymology of the word because it is माया    (mAyA ) that means "that which is not"

Let's get to the root of the word.

शिव can be broken down into शि and  व.

शि at a root level means "to lie down"

व at a root level can have a variety of meanings ranging from auspiciousness, power ,dwelling, strong.

Now we have the Unadi Sutras that says :

शोङ् स्वप्ने । अस्माद्वन् ह्रस्वत्वम् । शेते Sस्मिन् प्रप्ते सुखमिति शिवं क्षेमः ॥

again it talks about the root word शि  "to lie down and the subsequent explanation of happiness and well being that comes along with it.

So what is the   शि  "to lie down" all about?

It means "that in which everything lies and rests upon "

next..what about व ?which meaning is chosen?

That we have to refer to Shiva Rahasya where the व is taken to mean "Power ".

We do learn a lot by dissecting words.

Bal Ganesh - Ganesh And Kartike Race - Indian Mythology stories In English

Heck No! It's not always TANNO!

Another common mistake seen in Sanskrit is in the various Gayatri mantras we see online.

Its always like this..

Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe...

(Fill in the blanks with a deva/devi)

Tanno xyz prachodayat.

Today we would touch upon Visarga Sandhi and we would understand why its not  always TANNO.

Let's see the Visarga Sandhi Rule.

Rule:

Visarga is replaced with उकार.

A Visarga preceded by an ह्रस्व -अकार and followed either by an ह्रस्व -अकार or a मृदुव्यञ्जनम्(soft consonant) changes into an उकार.

Keeping this in mind lets take a look at some Gayatris.

Let's take an example from Ganesh Gayatri and Skanda Gayatri(the two brothers who disagreed over a fruit)

Ok here goes:

I would just stick to the last line of the Gayatri to explain the Sandhi rule.

In Ganesh Gayatri :

तन्नो दन्तिः प्रचोदयात् (tanno dantiH pracodayAt)

In Skanda Gayatri

तन्नः षण्मुखः प्रचोदयात्  (tannaH SaNmukhaH pracodayAt)

Let's see why in Ganesh Gayatri its tanno and in Skanda Gayatri its tannaH.

Yes! Its's because of the Visarga Sandhi rule explained earlier.

The actual word before the Visarga Sandhi rules come into action is

तन्नः(tannaH), then it depends what follows it.

if तन्नः is followed by a soft consonant as in द of दन्तिः ..then the Visarga is replaced by an उकार and

we get तन्नो..so for Ganesh Gayatri case closed!

Now Skanda Gayatri.

Here the तन्नः is followed by a hard consonant as in ष of षण्मुखः therefore the Visarga remains and it remains तन्नः(tannaH) and does NOT become tanno.

This is a very important fact to know as the internet is full of Gayatris of all kind that do not follow Sandhi rules.

Lets take another example of a Gayatri where the tannaH does not become tanno.

A very rare Gayatri hardly recited  though we subconsciously use it everyday yet very few of us realize that we need to worship it and would die without it even for just 24 hours.

ॐ वदनग्रन्थाय विद्महे नीलाङ्काय धीमहि |

तन्नः सुतन्त्र प्रचोदयात् ||

Om vadanagranthAya vidmahe neelAnkaya dhimahi

tannaH sutantra prachodayat.

Translation:

May We Realize Facebook, Let's Meditate on the Blue Logo One,

May Information Technology Illuminate us.

Breakdown:

vadanagrantha ...vadana(face) grantha(book)

neela anka (blue logo)..facebook is a blue logo!

sutantra is Information Technology(IT).

Humood - Be Curious | حمود الخضر - كن فضولياً

Common Mistakes While Writing Sanskrit.

One of the most common mistakes while writing Sanskrit stems from not been exposed to Sandhi rules and reading from websites where the writer's native language could not be too case sensitive about Sandhi rules.

Today I would touch upon परसवर्णसन्धिः (parasavarNasandhiH) which is of utmost importance to get the writing of Sanskrit right and also pronunciation right.

Rule:

When an अनुस्वार (anusvAra) is followed by any consonant other than श ष स ह it is replaced by the fifth letter of that वर्ग(varga).

When the  अनुस्वार (anusvAra) is at the end of a word the Sandhi is then rendered optional.

Let's take a look at a few common mistakes seen in writing Sanskrit

1) कंप  and कम्प

कम्प is the correct way of writing this word.

2) अंकः and अङ्कः

अङ्कः is the correct way of writing this word.

3)आनंदः and आनन्दः

आनन्दः is the correct way of writing this word.

Now coming to the situations where the Sandhi is optional.

1)अहं करोमि  and अहङ्करोमि

Both are correct.

Seeing stars?

Confusing?

Nope...its not..this is just the tip of the iceberg in Sandhi rules.

Sandhi rules is a very vast interesting mathematical topic which needs patience and understanding. So never jump the gun while learning a new language..go step by step क्रमेण (krameNa).

The problem is these days most of us have the crash course mindset...you can see learn meditation crash course, learn languages crash course, learn religion crash course.

Crash course is only for Crash Test Dummies and not humans.

Even to learn to utter a word as to call our mothers it took years.

Rome wasn't built in day.

Keep this in mind when learning anything.

Even in the Bhagavad Geeta Krishna says śhraddhāvān labhate jñānaṁ(the steadfast one gains wisdom)

At the same time  while exercising patience its good to be curious about the mechanics of understanding anything..just like how Humood sings and explains in his song... Kun Fudooliyan (Be Curious) كن فضولياً",

Wiz Khalifa - See You Again ft. Charlie Puth [Official Video] Furious 7 ...

वेगिता च उग्रता (The Fast and The Furious)

What is the most difficult thing to do in life?

To practice what we preach!

Its really easy to preach but almost 99.99% of us do not practice what we preach.

Reason for this is because the mind is fickle and can change from second to second though some might be in denial mode and feel they are in control 24/7.

In fact the famous Sufi mystic Jalaluddin Rumi said "Whoever's ever calm and sensible is insane".

One might wonder why a realized soul like Rumi said that.

The reason is because he was honest, he knew that the human mind is subject to change, subject to bipolarity of existence.

Even in the Bhagavad Geeta Krishna clearly states...to be equipoise in the polar opposites, sorrow/happiness, victory/defeat, loss/gain.

Krishna does not say "Hey guys be 24 hours calm 7 days a week"
He only states how to handle the ups and downs of life.

That's why Rumi said "whoever is calm and sensible in insane" because he knew that a normal human would have to face happiness and adversity and both do move the tectonic plates of the mind at times at a Richter 10!

Even for each form of divinity we have a शान्तः(shAntah) calm form and a उग्रा(ugrA) a passionate furious form.

And guess what!

उग्रा is a feminine word.

Man..this is getting really weird. ... in Sanskrit  sharp objects, fury, wrestling etc are all feminine words...dangerous!

No wonder the Shakti form of Goddesses are always Fast and Furious वेगिता च उग्रता (vegitA ca ugratA)  that can put Vin Diesel to shame.

So cheer up humans...even Devas/Devis are Bipolar!

We just have to be honest to ourselves and not be in denial.

Denial is insanity.

Shiv Tandav Stotram | शिवतांडव स्तोत्रम | Shiva Stotra | Shankar Mahadev...

रावणः(rAvaNaH)

One of the greatest person to walk this earth who composed the Shiva Tandava Strotram which till today stands out  as poetic excellence beyond comparison.

Contrary to all the drawings of Ravana as ugly in Amar Chitra Katha books, the Valmiki Ramayana describes him as extremely good looking  and well built not to mention his excellent intellect hence called Dashanana the 10 headed one for his mastery over the 4 Vedas and the 6 Shastras.

But the strange part is no Purana mentions his original name at birth.

Sometimes he is called Paulastya being the descendant  of sage Pulastya.

The name Ravana came on much later after the episode where he was roaring in pain when his hand was trapped beneath mount Kailash when he tried to uproot mount Kailash.

It was then when he composed Shiva Tandava Stotram to appease Lord Shiva..hence forth he was known as रावणः(rAvaNaH) meaning the one who roars loudly.

My all time favorite hero who stood out as the most majestic character in Valmiki Ramayana.
