What is the meaning of the word Agama (आगम)?
Fellow Malaysians! We are so used to this word to denote Religion.
Now let's take a look of the actual meaning of the word Agama.
There is shloka that gives the definition of the word Agama.
आगतं शिव वक्त्रेभ्यः गतं च गिरिजा मुखे |
मतं च शिव भक्तानां आगमं चेति कथ्यते ||
AgataM shiva vaktrebhyaH gataM ca girijA
mataM ca shiva bhaktAnAM AgamaM ceti kathyate
Translation:
The Agama originated from the faces of Shiva and fell on the countenance of Girija(Parvati) and spread in the world as the mata(religion/school of thought) of the Shiva bhaktas.
The word Agama is made up from the the 1st syllable of the following words:
A आ from आगतम्( Agatam)
ga ग fromगतम् (gatam)
ma गतम् from मतम् (matam)
meaning of आगतम्( Agatam) = originated from/to come from
meaning of गतम् (gatam) =went to, in the above shloka it means it fell on
meaning of मतम् (matam) = school of thought/religion
