Let's talk about family relationships today.


Firstly its a bit strange that Sanskrit has a word for step mother विमाता (vimAtA) but not really much of a mention of a step father.


So let's coin a word for step father too.

We need to be fair to all the step dads out there!


OK..in Sanskrit a step mother विमाता (vimAtA) is defined as मातुः सपत्नी (mAtuH sapatnI) which means 

Mother's co wife.

So that means polygamy was in vogue.


But hold your horses everyone.


Polyandry too was seen in the history.

In Srimad Bhagavatam we have the story of the 8 brothers known as Pracetas who were transiently married to one woman the daughter of Pramloca.


Then next we have Draupadi was had 5 husbands..the Pandavas.


So going by this surely we can surely coin and define  the word for step father


But in both these cases the step dads were also brothers!


विपिता (vipitA) technically should be step father where it  can be defined as पितुः सपतिः (pituH sapatiH) ..Father's co husband.


Now for some family confusion.


Let's take the family of the Pandavas.


Arjuna had a son by the name श्रुतकर्मा (shrutakarmA) who was born through Draupadi.

Arjuna had a few other wives too. But right now we are focusing on the son of Arjuna through Draupadi.


श्रुतकर्मा (shrutakarmA) had 4 uncles(father's brothers)पितृव्यः(pitRvyaH) and these 4 uncles also were his mother's husbands so that makes them his stepfather's too.विपिता(vipitA).


Let's learn singular and plural now.


पितृव्यः(pitRvyaH) is Singular.


पितृव्याः(pitRvyAH) is Plural.


विपिता (vipitA) is Singular


विपितरः (vipitaraH) is Plural.



Anyway it does not matter who has how many husbands or wives, the most important is everyone to stay happy after all the whole world is a family!(वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्) (vasudhaiva kuTumbakam)


For your attention : वसुधैव(vasudhaiva) = वसुध (vasudha)( the earth/world) + एव (eva)(Indeed)

This is a sandhi rule.


Mostly many mispronounce वसुध (vasudha) as vasudeva.


So kindly note this.

Let's get a little Metaphysical today.



अद्वैत(advaita) Non Duality  and द्वैत (dvaita) Duality.

How does Non Dualism fit into " The Duality Paradox of Metaphysics"?

For example..the " Duality Paradox" is seen in Shiva(शिवः) ..He has Shiva as in शान्तम् shantam (Calm/ Auspicious) and rudra रुद्र the Angry one.

Even Shaktas( Feminine Principle) have the सौम्य(saummya) (the gentle)  and उग्रा ugra (the fierce).

In Quantum physics there is the wave particle duality where a quantum object can play a 

Dr. Jekyll  & Mr Hyde game of being a wave  (वीचि )  and also a particle (त्रुटि) in different physical settings.

Taking all these into account..is अद्वैत(advaita) (Non Dualism) the Ultimate Truth or is द्वैत (dvaita) (Duality) the name of the game?

Has it always been just the two of us? God and I as two separate entities (पृथक् पृथक्) pRtak pRtak?

 So is अहं ब्रह्मास्मि (ahaM brahmAsmi)(I am a Brahman) just a delusion (विभ्रान्ति )(vibhrAnti)?

Heck I know the answer! But at least everyone got to learn a few new words today!

यद्यपि - तथापि (yadyapi -tathApi)





Yes Fellow Malaysians!  You saw the word तथापि (tathApi)!


We are familiar with this word as Malay Language uses this same word but written as "tetapi"


Well, the meaning is similar too but with a slight twist.


यद्यपि - तथापि (yadyapi -tathApi) is used in a combination and it means यद्यपि - तथापि (yadyapi -tathApi) (Even though-Yet)


यद्यपि (yadyapi)(Even though)- तथापि (tathApi)(Yet)


Let's take an example:


One in Malay and the other in Sanskrit!


Yes, I am Malaysian, so I would write this post for my fellow countrymen.


Walaupun dia bijak tetapi dia gagal dalam peperiksaan.


Even though he is intelligent yet he failed the examination.


Ok, Let's translate this into Sanskrit.


Walaupun is यद्यपि (yadyapi)(Even though) and Tetapi is तथापि (tathApi)(Yet)


यद्यपि सः बुद्धिमान् तथापि परीक्षायाम् अनुत्तीर्णः|


yadyapi saH buddhimAn tathApi parIkSAyAm anuttIrNaH




That's all.

As I said the usage is very similar as in Malay too but in Malay "Tetapi" is sometimes used alone without "Walaupun" but in Sanskrit यद्यपि - तथापि (yadyapi -tathApi) is always used together.


That's why I said the meaning is the similar but with a twist!

उपसर्गः (upasargaH) (prefix)





Today we would learn about prefixes.



A prefix in Sanskrit is called उपसर्गः (upasargaH).



Some points to note about उपसर्गः (upasargaH)

• उपसर्गः (upasargaH) is prefixed to a verb
• The meaning of a root can change with a prefix
• Roots can change from Atmanepada to Parasmaipada and also vice versa
• There are 22 known उपसर्गः (upasargaH)
• The usage is not limited to just one at a time, more than one उपसर्गः (upasargaH) can be used at the same time.

Let's take an interesting example.

नयति(nayati) can mean "to carry".

If the prefix परि(pari)  is added to नयति(nayati) it becomes परिणयति(pariNayati).

परिणयति(pariNayati) means "to marry"

Eg:

लोकयानं जनान् नयति (lokayAnaM janAn nayati) =The bus carries people

रविः देवी परिणयति (raviH devI pariNayati)=Ravi marries Devi.

Well, come to think of it is the act of carrying and the act of marrying related?
