Humor in Sanskrit.

Here is a nice stanza with a healthy dose of humor.

कमले कमला शेते हरः शेते हिमालये
क्षीराब्दौ च हरिः शेते मन्ये मत्मुणशङ्कया

kamalA(Lakshmi) sleeps on the lotus, haraH(Shiva) sleeps on the summit of Himalayas
hariH(Vishnu) sleeps on the ocean of milk---I feel its due to the fear of bedbugs!

The good the bad and the ugly - The best theme tune ever

The Good,The Bad and The Ugly!

Sometimes we feel Goodness is the ultimate goal in life..but is it really the goal in life?

Let's get philosophical today.

The Good and the Bad are polar opposites, either end of the same spectrum.

Bad is often called Good turned inside out.

As long as Good exists, Bad too would exist..Ugly ain't it?

That is why so many cultures have the concept of evil opposing goodness.

But is there a state where neither Good nor Bad exists where polar opposites are transcended?

What is that state called?

Well there is such a state and its called   द्वन्दातीतम् (dvandAtItam)

द्वन्दातीतम् is a euphonic combination(Sandhi) and is made up of two words

द्वन्द(dvanda) + अतीतम् (atItam)  = द्वन्दातीतम् (dvandAtItam)

द्वन्द(dvanda) means duality and अतीतम् (atItam) means transcend....therefore

द्वन्दातीतम् (dvandAtItam) is a state that transcends duality or polar opposites.

So no Good no Bad and certainly no Ugly!

When "False" is Nice to Hear.

Paradoxical?

Lets see why!

The word False in Sanskrit is known as मिथ्या (mithyA).

So why am I saying that "False" is nice to hear?

Well the False I am am talking about is Falsetto..which is defined as "a method of voice production used by male singers, especially tenors, to sing notes higher than their normal range"

Male singers raise their voices to high pitches which seem unnatural hence called Falsetto..( a false and unreal tone).

Falsetto is nice to hear when sung well.

A perfect Falsetto can be heard in the song I had posted a couple of days ago sung by Sam Smith.."Writing's on the Wall"

www.com.i don't know why!

I always wondered why Sanskrit does not have the letter W?

It has a letter V though as in व् .

Not only Sanskrit but many Indians languages too do not have the letter W and only have V.

For eg Tamil does not have W...yet we find the letter W being used to spell Indian names in Romanized script.

So W...can we live without you?

Waah Waah Waah..crying too needs W!

स्मरः (smaraH)

स्मरः (smaraH) means Recollection,Remembrance (Memory), also a name for the Angel of Love(Cupid)

The human body relies on memory function for many activities in our body.

Even to type on a keyboard our fingers just know which keys to hit also due to memory.

Why is the word स्मरः (smaraH) which means Recollection,Remembrance (Memory) is also used to denote the Angel of Love(Cupid)?

What has Love got to do with memory?

Heck it does!

To love someone is to remember someone.

Be it love for family or spouse or child or friend or God..all forms of Love rely on memory.

Al well known  method of prayer is called नामस्मरणम्  nAmasmaraNam...it means "Remembering the name of God"
